Mount Dora is a historic little town smack-dab in the center of Florida that’s known for a quirky and vibrant art scene.

Established in 1880, the town brims with charm and character. Although it’s located just north of Orlando, this part of the state is often touted as a little piece of New England—vastly different from the beachy flatlands most associate with the Sunshine State.

“Mount Dora is known for Lake Dora and for its hills. It’s a very hilly town, which is unique for Florida,” says listing agent Nova Fuller. It also has a vibrant downtown filled with shops and eateries. The town also hosts a number of fun festivals, from bikes to art to boats.

However, historic homes aren’t exactly plentiful in this quaint setting. But they do exist.

“There are a handful of historic homes around,” says Fuller.

One such home is close to the city’s downtown, and it’s currently on the market for $639,900. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom house has all the charm one would expect given its setting.

Dating from 1905, the Craftsman-style home was constructed just 25 years after Mount Dora was founded. To maintain its historic architectural integrity, the homeowners were careful when making updates.

“You won’t find any drywall or modern changes like that,” Fuller explains.

The homeowners did their best to stick to the original materials used to construct the home. Though they did add a few modern amenities.

“There are a really nice gas stove and granite countertops in the kitchen,” says Fuller.

As with many Craftsman homes of the era, a wraparound porch graces the entry. Beautiful Dade County pine floors run the length of the home.

This pine was used extensively in classic Florida homes, but “you can’t buy Dade County pine anymore,” Fuller says. Unless there’s an early 20th–century home or church being demolished in the area, coming across this kind of wood is rare indeed.

The office and art room both have beautiful views of the lake, and the main living spaces are open and inviting. For a buyer who loves history and a great floor plan, this cute Craftsman in Mount Dora makes perfect sense.
