The hockey legend Joe Thornton is skating away from his luxury mansion in Los Gatos, CA. “Jumbo” Joe is asking $9.5 million for his palatial space in the South Bay.
Now with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the veteran forward purchased the property in 2008, while starring for the San Jose Sharks. He paid $2.2 million, according to realtor.com®. The fully gated, private estate was custom-built in 2011. Set in the hills of Los Gatos, the picturesque setting offers views of the Santa Clara Valley and surrounding hilltops.
The listing has Sharks fans lamenting the now very remote possibility that the four-time All-Star will ever return to the Bay Area for one last skate in the Shark Tank.
Wherever and whenever he chooses to hang up his skates, Thornton’s home is certainly an MVP.
Billed as “resort-style living” in the listing, the Tuscan-style abode with modern amenities features 6,422 square feet of living space, plus a private, 659-square-foot guesthouse, perfect for an au pair or visitors.
The five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom spread includes arched doorways, beamed and vaulted 16-foot ceilings, and Venetian plaster walls. The limestone flooring is ideal for a hallway game of indoor hockey, as demonstrated in this image of the spectacularly bearded dad and his two kids.
The main floor includes a massive eat-in kitchen, with Miele appliances and overhead pendant lighting. Adjoining the kitchen, a great room with a beamed ceiling and fireplace opens to the patio and al fresco dining area through glass doors. The layout also includes a formal dining room with an ornate chandelier and a glassed-in breakfast nook, as well as a pantry and bar with wine fridge.
The spacious master suite has a bathroom with dual vanities, a fireplace, a separate shower and tub, and a walk-in closet. The layout also includes an office, children’s study and playroom, and a gym.
Outside, the 1.36 acres boast a large patio that extends from the living area, as well as a loggia with a barbecue and sitting area with a fireplace. The grounds include a gorgeous green lawn, as well as an infinity pool and spa. A three-car garage with an electric-vehicle hookup completes the property.
Now 41, Thornton is a future Hall of Famer in his 23rd season in the NHL. After being selected first overall in the 1997 draft by the Boston Bruins, he played with the team for seven seasons. Thornton spent 15 years in the Bay Area with the Sharks, and is currently on a one-year contract with the Leafs.
Monica Thomas with Compass holds the listing.
