The actor Michael Rapaport didn’t even have time to put his rare modern home in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park neighborhood on the market before it sold for $3.57 million.
The deal happened so fast that Rapaport had to ask the seller for a 60-day escrow so he could continue living in the house. He needed a place to stay while he shot and wrapped the third season of the Netflix comedy “Atypical” before moving to New York, according to the listing agent, Nick Collins of The Agency.
From the time Rapaport and his wife, the actress Kebe Dunn, made the call to sell the house, “it took about a day to find the right buyer,” Collins explains.
It went into escrow before it even went on the market.
Rapaport purchased the home in 2016 for $2.97 million, about a year after it was built. It’s quite a rare find in this part of Los Angeles, because most Hancock Park homes are close to a century old and traditional-looking—and legally required to stay that way.
“Hancock Park is among L.A.’s more classic and older neighborhoods, with most homes being built in the 1920s and ’30s and still standing,” explains Collins. “Many pockets of Hancock Park are protected by an HPOZ [historic zoning], which prevents you from a lot of exterior change. It’s become difficult to find any new construction at all in Hancock Park.”
Rapaport’s five-bedroom, six-bathroom home is a stellar example of modern luxury. Light and bright, it has wide oak hardwood floors throughout, as well as floor-to-ceiling Fleetwood doors that let in plenty of Southern California sunshine.
Counters and and surfaces were crafted from a variety of stone. The large quartz waterfall island in the kitchen is a showstopper and serves as the perfect complement to the modern, custom cabinetry, the Miele appliances, and the silver light fixtures.
The wide-open kitchen sits at one end of a sizable great room. A fireplace built from handmade limestone tiles is at the other end.
A dining room with a wet bar is also part of the sprawling great room.
The upstairs is accessed via a remarkable floating staircase, made mostly of white oak and glass. The airy stairs help make the 4,185-square-foot home feel even bigger than it is.
The primary bedroom features a striking fireplace and wide-open access to the outdoors. The western-facing deck off the bedroom is focused on a gas fire pit, allowing for effortless and intimate relaxation.
The bathroom is also spacious and boasts Calacatta marble surfaces and a double steam shower.
Rapaport uses one of the home’s other five bedrooms as a home office.
Outdoors, there’s a thoroughly modern pool with a waterfall, a covered outdoor kitchen, a green lawn and plenty of lounging space, obscured from the neighbors by giant ficus trees.
Much to the delight of every discreet privacy lover, there are security gates, walls, mature trees, and hedges that completely surround the property.
Rapaport, 51, has appeared in more than 60 films and 45 television series, including “Atypical.” He directed the documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” in 2011. He’s also known as an outspoken sports fan and a pot-stirring regular caller to the Howard Stern Show
