Fifteen years ago, the architect Margaret McCurry designed an ultramodern house like no other. The result is a 4,400-square-foot beauty on 3.5 acres in Oostburg, WI, with five bedrooms and four bathrooms.
But size isn’t what sets this particular abode apart. It’s as if McCurry had grabbed a pack of Crayola crayons and gone all out to liven up the exterior trim.
The owners who commissioned the project—featured in Architectural Digest in 2007—have now put it on the market for $1,175,000.
Lake Michigan hugs the property and you can see the waters from every room in the house. Its wraparound patio lies only a few feet from the water, thanks to the 190 feet of private shoreline.
Two balconies off the master suite provide an even more enviable view. The property also includes a two-car garage, its door ablaze with—you guessed it!—primary colors.
Each room is filled with light, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and curvaceous lines with lots of qi (for any feng shui fans).
When paired with the owners’ eclectic art collection, the effect is even more dramatic.

The home spans two levels, and its high-end features include two living rooms and polished concrete floors throughout.
The kitchen, with its island in the shape of a half-moon and gleaming stainless steel, is custom-built for any home chef who loves to entertain.
There’s also a sunroom with enough space for a fireplace, a bunch of Adirondack chairs, and a full dining set.
Oostburg is in Sheboygan County, about two hours north of Chicago and an hour north of Milwaukee. The area attracts golfers to its pro-level courses at the American Club, in the company town of Kohler.
Other projects by McCurry—a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a principal architect at Chicago’s Tigerman McCurry with her late partner in life and business, Stanley Tigerman—include the Art Institute of Chicago’s East Wing addition, Prairie Crossing (a conservation community in a northern Chicago suburb), and condos for the developer St. Joe Co. in northwest Florida.
The home is listed with Andrea Woda of Mahler Sotheby’s International Realty in Milwaukee.
