$65M Balinese-Inspired Beach House in Malibu Is Most Expensive New Listing

Malibu

A Malibu, CA, mansion with scenic ocean views and breathtaking interiors has hit the market for $65 million, making it this week’s most expensive new listing. Unofficially, the Indonesian-inspired beach house may also be this week’s most stylish abode.

After purchasing the place over a decade ago, the owners tapped Martyn Lawrence Bullard, interior decorator to the stars, to reimagine the residence as a sanctuary where Bali meets Malibu. For buyers who want to stay closer to home these days, this beach pad can transport you without any of the worry of air travel.

The lavish living space was featured in Elle Decor in 2014. Bullard snarkily told the publication that the Southwestern-style residence formerly on the property “looked like a giant Taco Bell.” He then embarked on a massive remodel.

That fast-food vibe is now a distant memory. The space has been transformed, with ornate woodwork, high ceilings, and exterior doors that disappear, for a seamless flow to the courtyard outside.

The Elle Decor profile says the eclectic interior is furnished with exotic furniture that includes “Indian chandeliers, British colonial chairs and tables, Chinese lacquer pieces, and Dutch colonial furniture.”

Indonesian architecture is the chief inspiration. Intricate Indonesian wood carving is given pride of place, with lintels and mirrors in the living room. The bed in the owner’s suite is described as being “built from the facade of an Indonesian palace.” In the lower level bar, grass-cloth wallpaper was applied with coffee and tea.

The massive,10,000-square-foot residence includes five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and three half-bathrooms with all the “contemporary comforts,” according to the listing details.

The high-ceilinged living room features opposing fireplaces, and opens out to the patio with views of the ocean. The great room includes the family room, dining area, and a gourmet kitchen with droolworthy countertops, as well as a pantry.

The floor plan also has two bedroom wings. The owner’s suite takes up one wing, with a covered patio and ocean views, luxe bathroom, and a library or study.

On the lower level, the bar room, perfect for parties, comes with wine storage, as well as a home projection theater, two powder rooms, and a changing room.

Another bar opens to a lower patio, spa, sitting areas, lawns, infinity pool, patio, and cabana.

Set on 1.22 acres, the grounds feature a palm-lined drive, a two-bedroom guesthouse, a reflecting pool entry, lighted tennis court and pavilion, and a four-car garage.

If the buyer can’t acquire all the furnishings with the sale, perhaps Bullard would be willing to return for an encore performance.

Chris Cortazzo with Compass holds the listing.
