Terrific Time Capsule House in Pennsylvania Is the Week’s Most Popular Home

Realtor.com

Fanatics of time capsule homes were clearly tickled by a Pennsylvania home with throwback interiors. Filled with glorious decor choices, the otherwise nondescript residence built in 1950 rocketed to the top of the week’s most popular homes on Realtor.com®.

And there was good reason for all the gawking. The original owners had the home professionally decorated when it was built and never looked back.

What remains seven decades later are carefully constructed interiors the likes of which just couldn’t be reproduced today. Inside this well-preserved place, you’ll see vintage wallpaper, original cabinetry, and a wood-paneled rec room—all of which appear as if they’ve emerged unscathed from another era.

Besides the vintage vibes, you were also gaga for gossip this week. Clicks on a $65 million mansion in Los Angeles soared after the throwback couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck toured it while house hunting in Southern California. The massive mansion is outfitted with every imaginable luxury (including a private medical room!) and the entire place is furnished by Fendi.

Other highlights include a bright-blue dome in North Carolina, an upscale suburban home outfitted with a doomsday bunker that can accommodate up to 60 apocalypse survivors, and a century-old log cabin in the woods.

‘Another World’: Pool at Sarasota’s $5.8M Casa de Flamingo Is Simply Spectacular

Casa de Flamingo Pool

PIX360

Most homes in Florida have swimming pools, but the pool at a Sarasota, FL, residence known as Casa de Flamingo stands alone.

“When I walked in, I had visions of movies I had seen,” says the listing agent, Steve Abbe. “I felt like I was in another world when I walked in there.”

The pictures do the place justice, he says, but walking through the doors into the place, he adds, “You’re just literally mesmerized.”

For a buyer yearning for a swim that is worthy of the silver screen, this 4,152-square-foot home is listed for $5.8 million. With azure waters lapping up against a palazzo, the home’s indoor-outdoor pool area is a sight to behold.

Abbe says the sellers spent two years searching the world for the perfect white and blue stones for the pool, and the right quarry, which could cut them at the same thickness.

The result is an elaborate area that looks like a Roman bath, with multiple archways and pillars surrounding an enormous, 45-foot pool.

“They wanted to have a living area that was inside—yet outside,” Abbe explains. “It’s a courtyard around the pool, and they live out around the pool most of the time, even though it’s not air-conditioned.”

The space has a bar, a pool table, a TV area, and more, all cooled by fans. Spacious and inviting, the outdoor area adds a few thousand feet of perfectly livable space.

“It just really lives open. You can look right up to the sky,” Abbe says. “The way it’s designed, you get sun on the pool but not on the rest of the area down there. It stays cool. Temperatures are beautiful, and the air flows through.”

As for pesky Florida bugs, they aren’t a problem at this house. Many homes in the Sunshine State are outfitted with glass structures surrounding the pool, to keep critters and insects at bay.

This has no pool cage, the agent notes, but bugs don’t get in, “because they don’t fly in the top, and they don’t come in through the opening archway where the pool goes to the outside.”

The rest of the house surrounds the pool, and most of the rooms on the upper floor have balconies overlooking the courtyard area.

Surrounding views are also worth savoring, because the home sits on almost an acre of land on Hudson Bayou and offers deep-water dockage.

“You’re only about 150 yards to the bay [and the Gulf of Mexico] from this house,” Abbe says.

True to the home’s moniker, the flamingo motif is a great highligh.

The surround of the front door is hand-carved Cantera stone, with male and female flamingos, Abbe notes. The imposing front doors are 10-foot tall mahogany, framed with 24 feet of stone carvings.

Inside, you’ll find four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The kitchen has Blue Azul countertops and professional appliances. A large great room connects to the kitchen.

Opulence is the word in the main bedroom wing, which boasts three chandeliers as well as a huge closet. A large bathroom has an oversized glass shower.

In addition to the fabulous main home, there’s also a welcoming guesthouse.

“When you come into the property, you come underneath the guesthouse. There’s an archway, and the guesthouse is built above that,” Abbe explains.

Guest quarters are outfitted with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area, making the property perfect for multigenerational living.

With the indoor-outdoor flow and abundance of courtyard space, the home is ready-made for a crowd.

“I think it’s just a real nice entertaining house. It lives so inside/outside. You spill out from the pool to the dock,” says Abbe.

While everything in the house is top-of-the line, the pool at the center of the home shines brightest.

“I want to jump in every time I walk into the house. It’s so inviting. I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” the agent adds.

Fun Fixer-Upper? Dome Home Amid the Dunes Needs a Handy Buyer to Dive In

Dome Home Pajaro Dunes

Dream Home Images

An iconic dome home right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Northern California is waiting for a buyer to dive in.

The unique structure amid the Pajaro Dunes of Watsonville, CA, sits on a quarter-acre of sandy land and is listed for $1,699,000. But the buyers must be prepared to dig even deeper if they want to round this dome into shape.

“It needs a lot of work,” says the listing agent, Natalia Lockwood. “It has three floors, with a really great main top floor. Thanks to the dome shape, you get all this light.”

Measuring 2,619 square feet, the home was built in 1979 and needs to be hauled into the 21st century. Lockwood says that the vintage quality of the property appears to attract prospective buyers, who are drawn to the character of the place.

“They want to preserve that style, but add in new amenities and the convenience of having things remodeled,” she says.

The ideal plan for a remodel would simply be to enhance the building’s essential features, she believes.

The main entrance sits on the top floor, where the curvature of the dome creates a striking living space.

“It’s a three-floor property, and all the main living is on the third floor,” she explains. “The higher you go up, the better the view is going to be.”

The kitchen, dining, and great rooms are all on the top level, along with a half bathroom. Bedrooms and bathrooms are one floor down, and a rec room space occupies the lowest level.

As currently configured, the home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with additional spaces that can be used for sleeping.

Lockwood says that while the structure is livable as is, it needs new decking, given its age and the deterioration of some of the wood.

“There were tenants living in there up until about a month ago, and they were very happy there,” she says.

She added that most potential buyers she’s spoken with would plan on a full remodel.

The place fits right in the community of Pajaro Dunes, where the architecture is far from cookie-cutter, and each property seems to be unique. Right next door, the agent says, is a castle. Another house is on stilts.

“That one was nicknamed ‘The Flying Barn,’ because it’s so high up in the air,” Lockwood says.

Many of the properties in the gated community serve as second homes or vacation rentals. That offers the opportunity of a steady income stream for a buyer who doesn’t plan to live on the dunes full time. The area has no limit on the number of vacation rentals, the agent says.

“Every property in there could be a vacation rental, and you don’t need a permit,” Lockwood explains.

Because the home sites are staggered, almost every house has an ocean view. The dome house is in the second row, but nevertheless has a gorgeous ocean view and beach access.

The agent sees the perfect buyer for the house as someone who not only wants to enjoy it, but who also wants to share it.

“Someone who wants to come in and do a full remodel and really accentuate the fact that it is a dome house and bring out the character and bring it up to today’s standards,” she says.

“As soon as you see it and walk up to it, you can just see the potential there,” she adds. “Whoever buys it is going to be really happy.”

U.S. Existing Home Sales Rebound in June After Four Months of Declines

A real estate sign is seen in front of a house for sale in West Los Angeles

Chris Delmas/AFP via Getty Images

The numbers: Existing-home sales rose 1.4% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.86 million in June, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday. Compared with June 2020, home sales were up nearly 22.9%, though the year-over-year comparisons are skewed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

The rebound was not as large as expected. Economists polled by MarketWatch had projected existing-home sales to come in at 5.93 million. Sales in May were revised to a 1.2% drop from initial estimate of 0.9%.

The median sales price of an existing home rose 23.4% year-over-year to a record $363,300.

Big picture: Economists are divided about the outlook for the housing market, with some saying the sector will remain on solid footing but not quite as hot as it has been over in the past year., while others see declines ahead.  A big question is whether mortgage rates can stay below 3%.

What happened: More Americans listed their homes for sale in June for the fourth straight month. Housing inventory was up 3.3% in June to 1.25 million units, the highest since November but is still well below year-ago levels.

Unsold inventory sits at a 2.6-month supply in June at the current sales pace, up from 2.5-month supply in the prior month. Properties remained on the market for 17 days in June, the same pace as the prior month.

Sales rose in the Northeast, West and Midwest in June and were unchanged in the South.

What the NAR said: “At a broad level, home prices are in no danger of a decline due to tight inventory conditions, but I do expect prices to appreciate at a slower pace by the year end,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.

What outside economists said: “Tight inventories and high prices remain a constraint although supply is gradually moving up. Evan as more homes come to market, affordability will likely remain a headwind in the near term,” said Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

Market reaction: Stocks were mixed on Thursday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down slightly and the S&P 500 higher after a rise in weekly jobless claims.

Thank You, Next: Posh NYC Apartment Once Rented by Ariana Grande Sells for $13.5M

Ariana Grande NYC rental sells

Taylor Jewell/Getty Images

A posh apartment once reportedly rented by the pop singer Ariana Grande and her former boyfriend, “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson, has been snapped up for $13.5 million.

The price includes two parking spaces worth $700,000 each—well beyond the price of a house in most areas of the country.

Phillip Salem of Compass brought the buyer. The listing agent, Steve Gold with Corcoran, represented the seller.

“This residence is truly special, because it is located in prolific designer Dame Zaha Hadid’s first residential building in New York City, situated along the High Line, in the city’s most coveted neighborhood,” Salem says.

“When it comes to the type of homes celebrities and stars want, it certainly isn’t cookie-cutter or basic,” he adds. “This building is anything but that. The building’s distinct architecture and design, both inside and out, differentiates this condo from anything out there on the market. From high-end finishes to the curvy lacquer walls—every custom detail was brought to life to showcase the profound artistry of Ms. Hadid, and that has made this property into one of the most exclusive addresses in the world.”

On and off the market since 2015 with an unwavering $16 million price tag, the eye-catching apartment was rumored to have been rented by the pop star and the actor in 2018, during their brief relationship.

The couple’s former love nest included five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, on 4,023 square feet of interior space. There’s also a step-out, setback terrace, with views of the Empire State Building.

A loftlike living area features a large great room with views of the High Line from the private balcony, as well as a separate dining room or family area adjacent to the Boffi kitchen designed by Hadid.

The kitchen has a sculptural island with beveled marble, and sleek cabinets with Gaggenau appliances, double dishwashers, double refrigerators, a steam oven, and wine fridge.

Designed with a four-bedroom layout, with a fifth bedroom possible, and four en suite bathrooms, the master bedroom includes a giant dressing room. The unit also comes with a separate service entrance and utility room.

Designer details include such features as 10-foot-wide motorized windows, distinctive curved glass, 10-foot-high ceilings, and custom lacquered wall paneling.

Located directly over the High Line in West Chelsea, the building is only moments from Hudson River Park, and from the mix of cultural, shopping, dining, and parks at Hudson Yards.

The boutique property with 39 units boasts amenities that cater to a lifestyle in need of luxury and privacy, including a drive-in, automated garage, a skylit, 75-foot swimming pool, a fitness center, spa, and the city’s first private Imax theater.

Residents are pampered with a full-time concierge, door attendants, a live-in super, and hand-delivered mail.

In addition to Grande, the property has attracted other celeb residents including, at one point, Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, who had also been renting there in 2018, before purchasing a $65.7 million penthouse on Central Park. The investor Wesley Edens, co-owner of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, scored a $20M penthouse in the Hadid building in 2020.

Grande has since moved on from the apartment, and her relationship at the time. Now married to real estate agent Dalton Gomez, the 28-year-old superstar has amassed an impressive property portfolio.

On the West Coast, the “Positions” singer picked up a contemporary mansion in the Hollywood Hills, as well as a $9 million tear-down, also in Los Angeles.

Grande also owns a $6.7 million Montecito estate that she purchased from the serial home flipper Ellen DeGeneres.

In addition to owning an enviable number of homes, Grande is a two-time Grammy winner, and a chart-topping, record-breaking artist who has cash to lay out on upscale abodes. In 2020, she raked in $72 million.
